Sites Like Amazon – 7 Online Shopping Alternatives

When most people think of online shopping, they think of Amazon. From its humble roots as an online bookstore, Amazon has become the “all things” store, offering an abundance of items, from 45 cent binder clips to $40,000 watches. There are other sites like Amazon, though.

Although Amazon is by far and away the most popular online store, is it the best? What are the Amazon alternatives / sites like Amazon? Let’s find out.

Ebay

One of the biggest names in the biz, this online marketplace lets users sell their unwanted goods at a set price, meaning you can snap up a bargain for less. eBay is one of those sites like Amazon where you find just about anything you’re looking for.

We often use Amazon to purchase used goods from third-party sellers. If you do the same, then we’d point you to a site like eBay where all transactions occur between third parties. Not a fan of the auction format? No problem. Just format the search results to only show products with “Buy It Now” enabled.

  • A trusted and secure marketplace that offers payment fraud protection for its buyers via PayPal
  • Works on a feedback system, so you can feel assured you’re monies are safe when you purchase from someone with a high rating

Etsy

Buy boutique direct from the seller and own something that’s truly unique. This website is focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies, as well as unique factory-manufactured items. These items cover a wide range, including art, photography, clothing, jewelry, food, bath and beauty products, quilts, knick-knacks, and toys. Many sellers also sell craft supplies such as beads, wire and jewelry-making tools. All vintage items must be at least 20 years old.

Shopify

If you’re looking for an Amazon alternative in order to sell your own products, then Shopify is the number-one solution. With its impressive software, you don’t need any experience to create a powerful online store presence (or hook up your physical store into the Shopify system as well). We also have an article on our website about 50 best Shopify apps – here is the link.

Overstock

Overstock  is an American online retailer that has been in business since 1999. This platform has a large number of categories to browse and even offers cars, travel, and insurance through its website. This makes Overstock one of the best ‘one-stop’ sites like Amazon currently available in the industry.

Overstock also has one of the best loyalty programs (called Club O), which gives you a generous amount of reward points on every purchase and also unlocks free shipping on every item (usually only available on items of $50 or more). This is an ideal replacement website for Amazon but also serves well as a secondary site where you can compare prices between Overstock and Amazon before purchasing.

Rakuten

Have you heard of Rakuten.com? Probably not. Have you heard of Buy.com? Most likely, yes. What many people don’t know is that Rakuten.com is Buy.com. Rakuten bought out the company back in 2010 and rebranded the site, which is about the time that Buy.com fell off the radar, at least in my social circles.

Light in the Box

This website offers a wide selection of brand name products in clothing, sunglasses, watches, bags, shoes, jewellery, kitchen, furniture, and many other categories. Light in the Box allows you to still buy the brands you love without having to empty your bank account. If you use Amazon to buy brand-name items, then Light In The Box is your best alternative as you’ll quickly rack up savings to be spent on even more great brand name items.

Jet

Jet.com was launched with one goal—to beat Amazon at its own game. Like Amazon, it sells a wide variety of items online. Jet’s standout feature is that prices fall as you buy more. Jet’s services include free returns within 30 days, 24/7 customer care, member savings with every item you add to your cart (plus additional savings when you purchase products designated as “Smart” items together, e.g., eligible toilet paper and paper towels) and discounts when you waive returns on products.

Prices will drop if you:

  • Opt-out of free returns
  • Pay with a debit card
  • Buy more than one item
